Hazlitt’s in Frith Street
Nowhere else captures the rich history of Soho quite like Hazlitt’s (****), pictured top. Sister to The Rookery, it shares that hotel’s love of traditional and antique furnishings, including everything from a grand chandelier to the Victorian bathing machine you’ll find in the Baron Willoughby suite. The actual building dates to 1718 but has all the modern comforts you’d desire, from air conditioning to flat screen TVs in each room. Literary types will love spending time in the library where freshly baked croissants are served each morning. It might inspire you too – it’s a tradition for any visiting authors to leave a signed copy of their books in the hotel.
Courthouse Hotel in Great Marlborough Street
We do like a hotel with an intriguing backstory here at boutiquehotels.co.uk and it’s difficult to beat a former courthouse which has seen a string of celebrities appear in its dock. Marlborough Street Magistrates Court is a Grade II listed property dating back to the 1800s and it hosted trials involving numerous well known names including Oscar Wilde, Johnny Rotten, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. It’s now been turned in to the five star Courthouse Hotel, offering stylish, contemporary rooms and memorable suites. The hotel also boasts its own private cinema and a superb roof terrace overlooking Soho.

Haymarket Hotel in Suffolk Place
Firmdale Hotels have three hotels in the area, following the same successful formula as the Knightsbridge hotel and Dorset Square Hotel. Take your pick from the Soho Hotel, the Covent Garden Hotel or, possibly the grandest of the three, the Haymarket Hotel (*****). This hotel has an amazing location, next to the Theatre Royal and around the corner from Trafalgar Square. There are 50 bedrooms available, as well as a separate entry four-storey townhouse that makes up part of the hotel. Contemporary artwork enlivens the lobby, conservatory and library, while the Haymarket also has its own 18-metre pool, complete with bar area. Décor is fresh and eclectically British, with luxury finishes, such as in the granite and oak bathrooms.
One Aldwych
One Aldwych (*****) is a worthy 21st century update on a grand Edwardian hotel. There’s an atmosphere of calm thoughtfulness throughout and an attention to detail that’s carried through from the feather and down duvets, to the iPod docking stations in each room, to the daily fresh fruit and flowers. Even the swimming pool benefits its own underwater music! As well as a lobby bar and two excellent restaurants, guests can enjoy a private lounge stocked with coffee table tomes, newspapers and iPads. And step out of the hotel and you’re right on the Strand, making the location a luxury in itself.
Dean Street Townhouse
Finally, the Dean Street Townhouse which is based in an historical townhouse but has a very different feel, with light vintage touches, such as a retro radio and the silver tea service complimenting the paneling or hand-painted wallpaper used as part of the classic décor of each of the 39 bedrooms. Bathrooms come equipped with rainfall showers and Cowshed toiletries. These peaceful retreats are in contrast to the exciting bustle of the all-day dining room, where you can enjoy delicious British-sourced food in a stunning room bedecked with leather banquettes and contemporary artworks.
